Sketchy storm: I had considered illustrating this scene from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for the 2013 TdP Award competition, where Mary walks in ‘all alive with the joy of seeing home again after an age-long visit of one week to the country; he got up and moved in clouds and darkness out at one door as she brought song and sunshine in at the other.’
Never mind that his left hand isn’t right (he, he!), and the bottom part of the rope should go between the legs,or that I ran out of paper at the top! Tom is having fun!

I’m nowhere near done with my entry, but a few are already posting their submissions for the Tomie dePaola Award (guidelines) for 2013. The frame this year has been blasted wide open: three books, any passage, line or description – just keep it black and white. I had a faint memory of The Yearling, but no spark. I’d seen several screen adaptions of Little Women, and I had read parts of Tom Sawyer. So I picked the latter up again, and was immediately inspired!
