PPBF: Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Farm & Blogiversary Giveaway!

MrsWishyWashycover

In honor of Women’s History Month I am focussing on outstanding female authors and/or illustrators. This week from New Zealand a candidate for the 2018 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, Joy Cowley, and illustrator Elizabeth Fuller! AND it’s my 6th BLOGIVERSARY! I’ll be giving away a picturebook of your choice, BUT it has to be written by a woman, and illustrated by a woman (yes, it can be a female author/illustrator!). One other ‘glitch’: I have to be able to purchase a new copy! Just leave a comment to enter, perhaps with the name of a female illustrator you admire!

Author: Joy Cowley
Illustrator: Elizabeth Fuller
Publisher: Philomel, 2003
Age: 2-6
Themes: farm animals, baths, home
Opening: This is Mrs. Wishy-Washy and this is her farm. Here is her house and her truck and her barn.

MrsWishyWashy1.jpgSummary: (from my library catalog) Tired of being washed by Mrs. Wishy-Washy, a cow, pig, and duck leave her farm and head for the city.

MrsWishyWashy2.jpgI like this book because: I read it to my storytime gang last week and they loved it! Great story of home and family among farm friends, super-smooth read-aloud rhyme, and it’s funny! I searched for a Mrs. Wishy-washy title because the author has been short-listed for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, soon to be announced for this year!

MrsWishyWashy3Resources/Activities: To complement the book, we played pin the mud on the pig! I had bandanas at the ready, but it was just as much fun to have them close their eyes as I spun them each around 3 times (till they were dizzy!). Check out the 235 candidates from 60 countries that were nominated HERE on the short list for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.

  1. Mrs. Wishy-Washy is an old favorite of mine. She first appeared in a beginning reading series from The Wright Group, and, of all the little books, that was always the kids’ favorite. Something irresistible about her! You brought back some great memories of some little ones!

    Happy Blogoversary.

One of my favorite finds recently is the illustrator Beatrice Alemagna.
