Author/Illustrator: Kevin Henkes
Publisher: Greenwillow, 1987
Ages: 4-8
Themes: mice, courage, siblings
Opening: Sheila Rae wasn’t afraid of anything.
Summary: (from my library catalog) When brave Sheila Rae, who usually looks out for her sister Louise, becomes lost and scared one day, Louise comes to the rescue.
I like this book because: I read a lot of picture books, and as much as I get excited about new ones to love, I rejoice all the more when I find an older classic. Almost 30 years old yet fresh , snappy, and kids can relate just as easily today.
Resources/activities: discuss individual fears, how to possibly overcome them, and how one person’s abilities differ from another’s.
For existing PPBF selections including resources and activities, go to Susanna Hill’s blog: HERE
Henkes imbues his characters with so much personality and such authenticity. Classics for sure.

A master! Yesterday a friend suggested I go work for the Carle, and my first thought was I could live near you!

Aw…And Carol Munro, Loni Edwards, and some guy named Mo something. Williams? Willamette? 😉

Oh, that guy. Yeah, I think my lovely agent reps him too. He’ll probably want to have lunch with us as soon as I get there. Hehehe!

The art is simply delightful! There is something to be said for those classics…and there is a reason why they *are* classics!

I love the illustrations. I’m a fan of Kevin Henkes, but will admit I haven’t read this sweet story. I love older stories that still hold kid appeal.

Now, how did I miss this Kevin Henkes gem? I’ll have to see if my library can bring in a copy.

Henkes is one of my absolute favorite picture book author/illustrators. I think I even prefer his style over Sendak! Every one of his characters I feel I have known or have been!

I LOVE this book! Actually, I love all of Kevin Henkes books with the mouse characters. The characters and their problems really come alive for the reader.

Kevin Henkes-enough said! I rejoice in the classics too and feel like I can learn soooo much from them. Even though PBs have changed, good storytelling hasn’t!
