My Entry – Susanna’s Illustrator Contest

Susanna Hill is putting on her First Ever Pretty Much World Famous Illustration Contest for Children’s Illustrators! Rules to follow: draw/paint/create a children’s picture book cover illustration (no text required – art only) for one of the top finishers in the March Madness Fractured Fairy Tale Writing Contest- read them HERE. Because it took a while to decide on an entry, I thought I might as well delve into some of my process, as I do so enjoy it when other artists share. I had good visual reactions to both the Three Wiggly Worms Bluff and The Jackrabbit Who Cried Gilamonster, so I sketched… 3WWBworms And sketched – a lot more than I am showing here.Jack rabbit Who Cried Gllamonster_08(3) (1) I came up with one cover for the The Three Wiggly Worms Bluff, but it didn’t float my boat… 3 wiggly worms_03(5) So I continued with The Jackrabbit — and got into a more graphic look… JRgraphic1blue JackRabbitGrahic2 Which also didn’t do it for me! So I am glad I stuck with it because I do like what happened next. So here is my entry… Please go to Susanna’s blo to check out the others – HERE

  1. Wow! They are all so cool but I’m glad you dug deep because the last one is like a real cover – amazeballs! *throwsconfetti*

  2. I love, love, love your piece!!! Have I said “love” yet? 😉 You have totally captured that naughty little jackrabbit. Really, I mean LOVE!!

I should stop now before I embarrass both of us. LOL!

  3. Julie-LOVE your little guy!!! I’d been watching for you to post something and you made my day! Love his expression. I also really appreciate your process. I’m not brave enough to show mine – they are on scraps of paper and so rough only I know what they are.

  4. Oh my goodness, I love everything about your last illustration! The sight of it seriously took my breath away. Thank you so much for taking part in the contest. This has been so much fun for me to see my characters come to life. 🙂

  5. Oh, I had trouble posting my comment to your blog as well! 🙂 Love your work, and so glad to see more of it here. Your cover is fantastic!

  6. Oh, wow, Julie…blown away here, too! There are SO many fantastic entries, now I’m thinking it’s a really hard call. I do NOT envy the judges, but these are fantastic! I can’t say enough about your many versions of the Jackrabbit! Good luck 😀

    • I’m so glad for any contest challenge I can manage – I ‘reach’ somewhere else every time. I’m always interested to see what others do with the same text or idea. And happy to have a new portfolio piece (esp since I need one!).

  7. I would totally pick up this book because of your cover! His expression is priceless! There is a difference between illustrations and illustrations that invite curiosity about a character. I think that’s what makes some artists PB illustrators and some not. And you nailed the whole PB thing! I love this, Julie.
