Sketchy storm: I had considered illustrating this scene from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for the 2013 TdP Award competition, where Mary walks in ‘all alive with the joy of seeing home again after an age-long visit of one week to the country; he got up and moved in clouds and darkness out at one door as she brought song and sunshine in at the other.’
Why didn’t you submit? I heard Tomie’s discussion about the entries at the SCBWI conference last week. It was interesting to hear the discussion on the entries.

I did submit – just not that scene (https://julierowanzoch.wordpress.com/2013/01/03/looking-for-tom-my-illustration-entry-for-the-2013-scbwi-tdp-award/).
Would love to know what he had to say!

I lost the note I wrote. He chose charcoal because it is a traditional medium and hard to work with. He said many entries were eliminated because they were too “muddy.” Some eliminated because they added a tad of color. The winning entry was similar to a silhouette that had been cut out. Solid black/stark white images. Another winning entry had Tom’s leg and body outside of the picture — Jan Brett style. Don’t laugh at my descriptions. I’m not an artists.

Oh no, we artists don’t claim to describe with eloquence, I would have said something quite similar! I was surprised by his choice, because he gave few rules, but one was that he asked us to use halftones, and I did not expect a clear-cut black/white choice.

If you’re a member of the Children’s Book Hub, Emma Walton Hamilton did a fabulous interview with Tomie last Tuesday night. I just love him! He is very traditional and doesn’t use digital. He likes to mix paints and get the right colors. He is so fascinating!

Is the interview posted on the Hub’s facebook page? I’ll have to go check!
