Here I sit, an inch-high Thumbelina on a lily pad, floating downstream. It seems a necessity as an author/ illustrator to establish an online platform, and so I will blog. Feeling as Thumbelina must have, I am anxious as to where this venture will take me, but there are others who have gone before and fared well.
Fellow participants in Julie Hedlund’s 12 x 12 in 2012: Picture Book Writing Challenge have been very helpful in navigating, and their support is much appreciated.
Together we strive to write 12 rough drafts in 12 months in 2012. Sounds daunting, but the energy flows from knowing I am not alone, and from the surprisingly constant support and good advice. I have written numerous rough drafts in the last 10 weeks, found an critique group, entered a fiction contest, pitch and query contests, and just yesterday I sent off a wordless picture book dummy for a work-in-progress grant contest for illustrators. As the year began I had no idea I could be so productive. And I am loving it!
Sounds great, Julie! You are accomplishing so much! And I love your drawing of Thumbelina – so sweet! 🙂

Wow, I’m impressed with how organized you are. It will help you achieve much. I sure could use a sprinkle of that magic dust. BTW: Great illustration and words to express how you’re feeling. Got room on that lily pad for moi? 😉

Thanks. Reading Naomi Lewis’ translations of many of HCA’s stories, and had Thumbelina on the brain!
